Seeed Studio on magzine

Few days ago we received this magzine from Mr.Shigeru in Japan,  and we were quite happy to see our picture printed on this nice magzine. This feeling is something like we saw ourself on TV when we were kids. lol

Before Chinese New Year

… we are having the busiest days for the past two months,  good news is that the upcoming Chinese New Year will give us a deep relax.

For 2009, I don’t want to mention the great support from our dear customers and partners,

or the keep increasing stock like Seeeduino family/ Electronic Bricks/ Various modules/Bee series…,

or the exciting Rainbowduino Carnival,

or the pushing to limit 13$ PCB service,

or the cooperative projects with Hackaday, Where labs and etc,

or the hot DSO nano and helpful community,

or our internal management difficulties and how we managed to handle but facing more…

Let’s just embrace 2010, year of  Tiger!

Web platform kits started shipping, Assembled boards next monday

Sorry guys, the shipping of Web platform delayed again. The scheduled shipping time should be at 10th, but we had some trouble in getting one of the ICs. Good news is, now we got the IC and have arealdy started shipping kits. If everything goes normal, assembled boards will finish manufacturing this week and start shipping on next monday.

Bus Pirate firmware v3.6 released

Bus Pirate firmware v3.6 is available for download, this is a minor bug fix release. Update using the normal firmware upgrade procedure. This release does not reach into the upper memory page, so there shouldn’t be any upgrade issues. Changes include:

  • Fixed version string. v3.5 displayed ‘Firmware 3.5′ instead of ‘Firmware v3.5′. This caused issues with Bus Pirate support in AVRdude.
  • Added pause with lit MODE and VREG LED to self-test.

Since release v3.1 the Bus Pirate v2go and v3 share the same firmware. Upgrade v2go with the firmware for v3.

Blizzard halts mail delivery

Due to the Blizzard attack at part of areas in US and EU, some flights were cancelled, parcel processing might delayed until it backed to normal. Meanwhile, it is the end of the year, we just had a nice christmas, new year party, and now the spring festival is coming. All these festival will generate large amount of mails, which will make HongKong post office extremely busy.

By the way, many people were asking about the difference between Free shipping and Air mail. Actually all order over 50USD from our depot will get free shipping service, their orders will be shipped with HK post air mail, both with tracking number. It sounds like a perfect way,  you can get item from us with good quality, amazing price and free shipping! But my suggestion is: Please choose couriers like DHL or FedEX for faster delivering if you are in hurry, or you can just use the cheap air mail. Probably you will find it’s very slow, but do not worry. If your order by air mail is notified as “shipped” for 30 days without reception, please contact your post office and notify us. We will follow up closely to track the parcel, and refund/ reship in the worst case.

So, please, before you get angry, just have a little more patient.

All the best

open hardware, a propaganda way

We have been practicing open source business pattern for quite some time, you might have heard about our 13$ fusion PCB, fusion Kits, or collaborative projects like Bus Pirate, twatch and etc. It’s not like following angel’s trail, we glared in the darkness and follow intuitions. Thanks to the great community that give us many suggestions and ideas, we managed to get the ball rolling. The difficulty of making and distributing open source hardwares are not a melody. Unlike easy to copy software, it got to be physically made and shipped, even with all the source files and BOM in hand.  Thus the most effective way for now, is still centralized production, especially for PCBs.

First we managed to provide PCB services for open source hardware. People do group buys to make common interest PCBs, it should happen to projects with reputation and well organized. On the other end, every PCB designed has its purpose, able to be reused by other people one way or another. So we held fusion PCB service to minimize the average cost and make better use of each effort.

Second is the effectiveness of organizing the resources to a Kit level, sourcing the BOM and distribute is another time consuming process. It’s not feasible to stock every common components for now, but feasible to a specified kit. We receive the basic costs to initiate it as a project, then publish it on our web store for retail. Any revenue will be send back to the designer on session end.

Finally, products.  It needs a much greater efforts in doing a right product right, from trustworthy partnership to close communication, including penetrating design, in-depth tech support, detailed documentation, effective fulfillment process and many etc.  IMHO, an eco-system could be like below diagram, in a propaganda way.

Fusion Kits process

Simply put: 1) the designer links community by information 2) the community get product from Open hardware company3) Open hardware company collects profit for designer to support further improvement.

The community welcomes open hardware designs and needs the practical product to tweak with.  They purchase from open hardware company to get the product,  saving the costs and time. They communicate with original designer for ideas, supports, share thoughts and provides feedback.

The designer could concentrates on the product design, provide active support to the community, keep the product evolved, and save the efforts needed to get the product made.  No need to build a web store, pack or post, just link to the product page in open source company web store.  They get royalty or profit from the company to fund their innovation.

Lastly, the open hardware company cooperate closely with designer to introduce new open source designs, handle the prototype and manufacture process, then list the product in store for promotion.  The community could get the products directly by simple purchase. All quality issues, logistic problems, after sales support are handled by the company.  By consolidating more projects to strengthen their supply chain, the open hardware company are  able to provide more professional service in gradually reduced costs.

We believe it could be a feasible pattern of open source hardware business. It’s never easy even for us to get a supply chain for small volume productions while guarantee the quality, but the successful projects like cooperation with HackaDayDangerous prototypes has enhanced our faith. There are always more details needs to improve, please feel free to lift your questions, it will be answered and summarized to a FAQ. :) Your opinions and suggestions are sincerely welcomed!

4 . Create another file named as CONFIG.DAT in your SDcard root(file size must bigger than 1KB). Or directly download here and copy it into SD card root.

Attachment:
CONFIG.rar [403 Bytes]

5 . To save the waveform : move the cursor to FS option, choose the file you want to save , then press “M” .

Why my DSO Nano can not be recognized by PC

1 . Make sure you have installed the STM32 Driver.
2 . If your DSO can be seen by PC but shows as a unknown device , please remove the D2 ESP diode, then try again.
3 . If there’s nothing happened when USB pluged in, please check the R24 of DSO , it might be a 1.8K(182) resistor, you can try use a smaller one to replace it.

When I use the PC to visit SDcard via DSO Nano, it shows wrong information or error

DSO Nano ’s firmware dose not support card reader function well, it is recommended to use a independent card reader.

Is the X10 and the X1 use the same Probes
No , if you want to use the X10 , you have to use the X10 probes .

Is DSO Open source ?

The F/W of V1.X will be open source and all people can use or modify them freely , but there is some third party code included in V2.X F/W and we don’t have the authorization to publish them.

The H/W is open source for all version.

Why can’t i compile the project code

The source code was built by IAR 4.2, IAR 5.x is not supported.
